In 1531 the Virgin Mary appeared 5 times to Juan Diego, a middle aged, Aztec convert to Catholicism. After revealing to a skeptical Bishop his tilma (apron), it was found to contain roses and a beautiful image of the Imaculate Conception- a woman with sun and stars standing on a new moon with an angel at her feet. The tilma still hangs in the shrine built at Mary's request. This nicho is made of tin with a glass window. The image is paper.
