This wonderful little oil painting of the Virgin Mary and Child originated in Cusco Peru. During the colonial period European influences, mainly due to the teachings of Franciscan and Dominican friars produced a very particular art known as Indo-Christian art.This Latin American visual art was influenced by Spanish, Portuguese and French Baroque painters.
The Cuzco school, where the Virgin Mary was painted produces mainly art from the 17th and 18th century. Most Cuzco paintings are created anonymously because Pre-Columbian traditions define art as communal.
